Introducing some of the past recipients of assistance from the WA Motor Industry Foundation:

Chloe and Brae

The Motor Industry Foundation has provided assistance for a young Western Australian woman who found herself in need of a reliable vehicle.

Chloey Dougheney is the single mother of Brae Hayes, a beautiful eleven-month-old child with a number of serious health problems.

Pictured above are Foundation chair Peter Fitzpatrick with Chloey and Brae and the vehicle provided through the Foundation.

Chloey fell pregnant at 19 and decided to abandon her tertiary studies to keep the child. Unfortunately Brae had a complicated birth during which his brain was starved of oxygen. His medical condition is complicated and requires frequent medical treatment at PMH and visits to various specialists in Perth. Chloey has chosen to stay in Bunbury to be close to what little network of support she has.

She had been driving a very old, and unreliable, car and had to stop the vehicle to make running repairs on a number of occasions while driving herself and Brae to and from his many appointments and frequent stays at PMH. Brae begins to "fit" if he gets too hot - and with summer approaching, such breakdowns could have inevitably led to serious consequences.

Chloey receives only a carer's allowance and rental subsidy. She simply could not afford another car.

Their plight was brought to the attention of the Foundation , which has sourced a replacement vehicle for Chloey and will arrange ongoing maintenance and fuel for the vehicle. Our thanks to the Fortron Group who assisted with the provision of comprehensive insurance for the vehicle.

The Foundation is also arranging for Chloey to do an advanced level defensive driving course, generously provided by the AHG Driving Centre at Perth airport .

Motor Industry Foundation of Western Australia - Inspired to change lives in our community The Wilkie Family

Wilkie Family receives a Toyota Hiace

Brodie and Amanda Wilkie first came to the attention of the Motor Industry Foundation aunt and grandmother wrote to us and asked for our help in finding a specially equipped van to suit their needs. We listened to their amazing story and were pleased to be able to help such a worthy family.

Four years ago, the Wilkie family faced the devastating news that their then 3 year old daughter Brodie had Batten Disease. It is an extremely rare neurodegenerative disorder (the Australian and New Zealand Support Chapter records only 44 cases in both countries). It has caused Brodie to lose the ability to walk, crawl, talk and even feed herself in the four short years since her diagnosis. The family then faced the heartbreaking news that Brodie’s younger sister Amanda had also inherited the same condition. At just 7, Brodie is now completely immobile and confined to a wheelchair, and Amanda at 5, has just been moved into her first wheelchair. They rely on their mother Debbie and step father Peter to care for them fulltime.  There is currently no known cure for Batten Disease.

As hard as it is to imagine this debilitating condition happening to any small child full of energy and joy, it is even more tragic to think of it affecting two young sisters identically. Debbie, Peter and their two older children are a caring, patient and courageous family and it is a great pleasure for the Motor Industry Foundation to be able to assist by purchasing a Toyota Hiace van capable of taking not one, but two wheelchairs, and with air conditioning to help keep the girls’ temperature regulated. It will allow the family of 6 to travel together and relieve some of the physical effort of moving Brodie and Amanda in and out of the car for their frequent medical appointments.

The Foundation is also very proud to be associated with the Car Craft Group, who are the sponsors of this program to support the Wilkie family. Car Craft are committed to long term support of the Foundation and this is just one of the worthy causes their sponsorship will benefit from. Dean Taylor, Group Manger of Car Craft says “It is a great honour for us to be a part of the Foundation’s work in trying to make the Wilkie’s life a bit easier. We are committed to supporting the Motor Industry Foundation and showing that we care about our local community.”

If your company is interested in sponsoring a project or family, please contact MIF on 9453 7900. We have many more families, just like this who need assistance immediately.

The Mauger Family

The Mauger Family of Mullalyup will find getting around a little easier in future, thanks to the WA Motor Industry Foundation.

On Tuesday March 31st 2009, the Foundation hosted a Wine and Hospitality Auction at Friends Restaurant at the Hyatt Centre, where Linda and Ross Mauger were presented with a wheelchair modified Toyota Commuter van, allowing them to transport their son Brenton in his wheelchair, along with their two younger children, in comfort and safety.

Brenton is 16 and suffers from a rare brain condition, which has resulted in profound disability and high support needs. Despite this, Brenton attends school four times a week and loves outings with his family, especially to watch his brother and sister play sports. The addition of a specially equipped vehicle allows him to continue to enjoy these activities which are so important to him and his family.

The Toyota Commuter was proudly sponsored once again by the Car Craft Group, and presented to the Maugers by Noelle Simons, General Manager of Car Craft. At the function Ross made a moving and heartfelt speech about how important the provision of the vehicle was to them, and how much it will improve the quality of their lives.

Thanks to Car Craft for making this possible.
